These natural asalato are handcrafted using dried gourds from the Oncoba Spinosa tree, sustainably harvested near a small village in Senegal by our friend Moïse and his community. Once a year, this incredible fruit is hand selected, cleaned with care, and sent across the ocean to our Kootenay workshop, where we assemble each pair by hand.
How big are they? With this first batch we are offering the smallest size gourds which are about the same size as our Laka Kashakas. Each gourd is unique but they are around 1.75″ / 4.45cm each. The rope is 5mm in diameter and is adjustable to any hand size by sliding the centre knot to the preferred length.

These instruments are available in limited quantities, based on the seasonal harvest, and come in three rope colors. While they do not include a carry bag like our classic Kashakas, they offer something incredibly special — a direct connection to the heartbeat of Senegal and the artistry of its people.

The Kiseng Kiseng Series are handcrafted from natural gourds sourced directly from Senegal, making each one a unique work of art. While they offer an authentic, traditional sound and feel, these gourds are naturally less durable than our Kashaka Series and may be prone to breakage if played aggressively. We have given each set a sturdy coating of finish and we guarantee them for 60 days from date of purchase to give them the best possible chance of lasting through many sessions of play.
